What is a business card?

A business card is a piece of card that has information about a company or an individual. They usually have the person’s name, email address and phone telephone number.  They are a brilliant way for people to pass on their details so that others can look into them and can help with getting their name out into the world. Social media is becoming more popular they are becoming less used but they are still a great way of giving people your information as you can just keep them in your bag or wallet so if you run into anyone you are prepared.

On Tuesday the 10^th June 2014 I went to Somerset University to have a look at the work that the students have done for their end of year show. I was really impressed by the amount of work as well as the quality of what they had produced. The work for the course I was looking at (media make up) was really interesting and they had set the work in a large circle and had large images of the models on the ceiling and walls with the wigs and prosthetics surrounding. I also loved the way that people left their business cards out for people to take which I believe was a really good idea and it meant that if people liked their work they could take their details. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the catwalk show to see it live on the models but by them leaving out their portfolios I was able to get an idea of all the variety of work they have done.

After seeing all of this work it makes me feel excited for all that is to come if I got to this university next year. I know feel more confident about what I will be doing and what I will be aiming to achieve

EXETER UNI: ART HISTORY AND VISUAL CULTURE

This was the first course that I looked at. During the course I will be looking into the history of things and why it was done in the art world. You get to study all different forms of art including painting and sculpture. The course seemed really educational and gives you the opportunity to study abroad if you wanted to. The university also has really good reviews and is one of the top rated universities in England so it would be a big achievement to go there.

The downside of the course is that it is very theory based and I am used to the practical side of the art world. Also during the tour I felt as though they were very over the top and though I went to several tours I never actually got to meet the people who will be teaching me or where I would be during the lessons which put me off a little.

SOMERSET UNI: FDA MEDIA MAKEUP

This was the second course I looked into studying. Though its not in a Uni I loved the atmosphere and the people. I also loved how I went to lots of different workshops that helped prepare me and they always seemed keen to help me and offer support.

The only downside of the university was the fact it was in a college but as it was only 2 years long it allowed the idea that I could do another course after if I wanted to. Also the other downside was when I was doing the interview I didn’t feel as though they were interested in my work and they didn’t ask much about what I had done in the past.

After looking through all the different options these were the only two courses I applied for. I chose Somerset as my top choice due to their friendly way towards me and the way they wanted to help me through the whole process. I put Exeter as my second choice as I still liked the idea of the subject and what I would be studying. I also liked the idea of studying something different and learning more about art.

The first website I looked at was through a company called Camps International. They take trips out all over the world to do all different things. Some of the countries include Kenya and Tasmania. They do a variety of work including work with environment and the community. The trips all sound really good and whether you saving a species or building a school they will be making a big impact on the area and the people that live there. They also seem really nice and the website has several ways of contacting them if you wanted to ask anything and think I would be making a big difference working with them.

The downside of the programme was that there was no indication on costs or how long you do them for so I felt as though more information would be helpful so I requested a booklet.

GAP 360

The next website I looked at was Gap 360. They give you a choice of different types of gap years. They have a choice of paid work, volunteer, teaching and many more. I like this website because it is easy to navigate around and its very clear what the different options are. The website also allows you to go to a variety of different countries and when you click on each different option with lots of information about each trip. The other benefit was that it tells on the page how much its going to cost for each trip so you know what you are letting yourself in for and also you can choose the amount of time that you are away.

The only thing is there is a lot of choice for me to look at so I have requested for a booklet to come to the house so that I can see a little more information and make a choice.

File Extentions

GIF (.gif)
Gifs stand for Graphics Interchange Format. It was introduced into 1987 and is most commonly used for use on the internet as its easily supported and is portable. It uses 8 bits per pixel which allows a single image to reference its own palette of up to 256 different colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It is also good as it works really well with animated images.

TIFF(.tiff)
TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format. Its used mostly by graphic designers and the publication industry. Its really good for image-manipulation applications as allows you to easily edit and change your image.

PNG(.PNG)
PNG stands for Portable Network Graffics. It was created as a replacement for GIF files as it makes the files easier to manipulate and is portable.It supports palette-based images and Grayscale images and full-color non-palette-based images.PNG was approved for this use by the Internet Engineering Steering Group on 14 October 1996.

RAW(.raw)
RAW stands for Raw Image Format. A raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of either a digital camera, image scanner, or motion picture film scanner. They are called raw not yet processed and therefore are not ready to be printed or edited. They are quite large files though as it has so much data in one file.

JPEG (.jpeg)
JPEG is used method of lossy compression for digital images and is expescially used with photographers as is small and still allows you manipulate and compress files. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable trade off between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.

RGB(.rgb)
RGB is a extention created on a Silicon Graphics workstation. Run Length Encoding (RLE) compressed or uncompressed images in grayscale or color, and also supports optional transparency. RGB files can be opened and edited by most image editors, such as Adobe Photoshop and the GIMP. Its good for printing.

CMYK(.cmyk)
A file with the CMYK file extension is a Raw Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black Sample file. like RGB its good for printing images. CMYK allows you see colors on your screen that will be closer to the final printed piece.

Are We Normal:Up Against It

 

For this shoot i wanted to look at an unusual way of experimenting with portraits. I want to do this by coving ther models face and only allowing parts of it to be seen. To achieve this i used fuzzy plastic so that everything else would be burred out. I was really inspired by Jenny Saville. I really like these images as now they have been desaturated theyhave a really ghostly and spooky effect about them. I love the images as well as they go so well in a pack. If i could improve then i would have tried to make them a little more clearer as they are a little out of focus.
